Frequently asked questions
Jump to a question:
When was the original concept for Tails of a Dog's Life created?
The short stories the series is based on began being written around 2011-2012, but the concept for the TV series was not originally created until around 2018, when a basic outline was drafted and characters began being developed. The screenplays for the show were not first written until 2022.
How long does it take to write a full-length screenplay for the show?
From concept to completion of an initial draft, the process can take anywhere from day to weeks, or even months, for a screenplay to be completed. Only five episode drafts were completed in the first year the show entered development. Sometimes it’s a little harder to come up with those classic quotes and jokes the show is known for!
When did the artwork for the show first begin being made?
An original concept for Charlie’s design was created in June 2021, but an artist was not hired to work on the series full-time until May of the following year, when new concepts for Charlie and Butch were the first project she worked on. Since then, more than 50 different drawings have been created within the first year of the show’s development, from character designs to scene depictions. Check out our Gallery for some examples!
Where is the city of Rockport based on?
Rockport is based off of the city of the same name from the video game Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005). Its suburb of Rosewood also borrows a name from the game, though the two different versions of Rockport have no other official relation other than their names.
How many short stories existed in the original series the show is based on?
A total of approximately 10-15 stories were written the first few years they were created. Each one focused on a different job the main character would be doing, and this would change in each story (except for stories that included multiple parts). Subjects included doctors, dentists, veterinarians, firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and more.
Are the characters in the show based on real people?
The character of Anthony Vasquez is loosely based on series creator Andrew Vega and his actual life, though still incorporating fictionalized or unrealistic traits (such as his ability to drive). Most characters are named after or in reference to others, but convey much different personalities than their namesakes.
Do different versions of the show exist?
Some scenes and/or storylines have been incorporated into stage plays, adapted by series creator Andrew Vega. These scenes are not necessarily identical to one another, as stage plays are typically produced in a smaller scale or setting, but they still share similar ideas and/or quotes from their TV versions.
